I agree. As soon as I saw the scene, I thought that he probably said it when they completed the coal brick task.
It's stuff like that which causes some of us to wonder at the boyfriend/girlfriend thing. Carrying your girl across a hard part of the race is something we've seen couples do. Sometimes they do it for fun!
These guys are couples and it would have been a perfect thing to do then but they didn't. Is it because they didn't think of it or because Sarah hates being carried?
I thought he was carrying their backpacks.
And he's at some kind of advanced level where he's been deemed superior, and/or a teacher.
I'd go for that idea with these two.
Peter & Sarah - Friends
I have to say that while I don't like him, I'm not that thrilled with her either. She seems a bit passive/aggressive to me. Plus she did decide to date him after knowing him for years so I'm not sure what that says about her.
I also think, as much as I hate him, that he was set up a bit in the editing last night when they were going to the pit stop. The part about "we're a team" seemed to have come from a stationary interview, not something he said as they were walking. (I'm going by the sound quality -- too good -- and his voice -- didn't sound like he was walking/exercising.) I did think it was strange that he didn't offer her an arm but maybe she decided this was the best way to go -- it was a very narrow strip of ground and maybe two people wouldn't have fit on it.
I find their entire story/relationship to be just weird. Supposedly he coached her through her Ironman competition. Yet he's a horrible coach who doesn't seem to understand what motivates her. He also gives up whenever the tasks get frustrating. What kind of coach does that? I wonder if the only coaching he did was on things like what fake leg to bring and tuning it for the different events... i.e., a technical coach rather than an all-round coach.

Well, there's not a lot of room for during-the-race coaching in the Ironman; it's not like he can ride or run or swim alongside her during it. So I'm thinking that "trainer" may be a more accurate descriptor than "coach". Perhaps he really doesn't know how she deals in the middle of the course. He knows what to say at the beginning and at the end.
BTW, when Phil was doing his walk-up to the mat, tht path through the paddy looked like it was about a foot wide on the level, with a fairly steep slope down to the water on either side. I don't believe that there was room for two people to walk abreast on it. so he's got a legitimate reason for being ahead of her. Not as far ahead of her as he was, though.

The sight of her crawling along behind him bothered me, too. A co-worker speculated that she might have chosen to crawl because the path didn't look too firm. Still, he should have remained closer to her. I will give him this, however - he has been shown carrying both of their packs on several occasions.

And I'm sure he brags about how wonderful he is for carrying so much weight and how dependent Sarah is on him, etc.
If/when they're eliminated, I am hoping for an on-the-mat dumping of him by Sarah. We haven't had a Philimination break-up in a long time, and I'd pick them and Rob/Kimberly as great candidates for the next one.

Why didn't he just give her a piggyback ride across that path, then? If it was too narrow to help her otherwise, she's a tiny thing compared to him -- he could have carried her to the pit stop in far less time than it took her to crawl across.
Overdubbed comment or not, he still acted like an ass.

I thought he had the packs too... I went back thru the pictures posted on the CBS website but there weren't any that would have answered that question. And we have no way of knowing what they said to each other - Sarah may have preferred to get across that way (altho I agree it looked awful and it was evil editing, but probably deserved for many other reasons).

Not to mention she's about half his height, and probably weighs as much as a gnat.
He's just an ass.
But I'm with MacMadame. I'm not that sold on her, either.
I think what I hate the most is the smug satisfaction they have about themselves.

How much do you want to bet they've both been through est/Landmark training or something similar?
