Bart's Pre-Race How-to Guide
How to get the Guido Edit: Fall a day behind the rest of the teams. This can be done one of two ways. The original method was to fall 24 hours behind during the season as a whole; however, subsequent seasons have featured more bunching, so no team has entered the final leg more than 24 hours behind the other teams. The best way now to get a Guido Edit is to fall behind en route to the penultimate destination, while the other teams are at the ultimate destination. This method was employed by David and Jeff (Team Who?) in Season 4, but in order to do that, you have to have a large distance between the leg 12 pit stop location and the penultimate destination. Since David and Jeff, Seasons 5, 6, and 9 have had such a long distance but Seasons 7, 8, and 10 have not.
How to honor the victims of 9/11: Pay your respects at the World Trade Center site. Currently, the site takes the appearance of a regular construction site. If you never visited New York City prior to the attacks, walking to the site doesn't have the same kind of emotional impact as you might think. On the south side of the WTC site along Liberty Street, there are huge panels showing the names of those who lost their lives at the WTC on 9/11 including F. T., a trader at Cantor Fitzgerald who was John Vito's best friend and Jill's brother. There are other displays on the south and east sides of the WTC site that help to serve as reminders and tributes to those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
How to wear your hair like Ensign Gates: On the TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ensign Gates is a minor character who appeared much more often than she spoke. She was played by Joyce Robinson, who later married Uchenna Agu. Ensign Gates wore many hair styles during her stay on the USS Enterprise and in the episode "Descent", she wore a style with large braids twisted into several large knobs. This website shows how to re-create this style, although personally, I think she looks better bald.
How to get to a Kentucky basketball game: If you're David and Mary, it's a little over three hours via US-119, US-23, KY-114, The Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway, and US-64 to get from Stone to Lexington. But let's say that you're a Kentucky alumnus in Los Angeles and you don't have a private jet to get to the big Florida-Kentucky basketball game on February 10th. According to Travelocity, the cheapest ways to get from Lexington to Los Angeles are on US Airways via Charlotte and American via Chicago. Slightly lower fares are available if you're willing to drive to Louisville, but nonstop flights to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport, which is an hour and a half north of Lexington, are more than double the price of flights on US Airways and American to Lexington. How to clean Heelys Wheels: Heelys are shoes with wheels in the heels that function as both sneakers and skates. Charla will be wearing a pair on the race to help her glide and fly through airports and other places with a hard, smooth surface. The wheels pop out and can be replaced by a plastic plug, but how do you clean the wheels? According to this website, it's a very dirty process involving WD-40 and white lithium grease, which should be done in a well-ventilated area. Charla probably won't have access to lithium grease and WD-40 while on the race, so we'll see if her Heelys survive as long as she does.
How to have a successful long-distance relationship: Long distance relationships, such as the one Eric and Danielle have, are tough. So how do you have a successful long distance relationship? I called up Sister Ender, who has been dating her fiancée for over eight months and who lives two and a half hours away from him. While it would be tempting for Eric and Danielle to go see all of the sights of New York while Eric is visiting Danielle, or to go to South Beach while Danielle is visiting Eric, Sister Ender suggests living a normal, regular life during visits. That doesn't mean that you can't do anything special, but it means that you don't turn your time together into a whirlwind vacation. As an extension of this, Sister Ender recommends spending time with each other's friends and family. She also recommends setting regular times for daily communication. It's really awesome to see how good of a relationship Sister Ender has with her fiancée, so I feel comfortable sharing this advice with others.
How to join a Fraternity: Many college students are involved with fraternal organizations, and many form deep friendships with their brothers - such as the friendship between Kevin and Drew. It's not just men who can be frats. Many sororities, such as Alpha Phi, Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Delta Delta Delta, now bill themselves as fraternities for women. The process for rushing is different from school to school, and may be different for men and women. At the University of Utah, both fraternities and sororities have a formal recruitment process. At Purdue, men's fraternity rush is a completely informal process, while sororities have a very formal process. Kevin and Drew's alma mater, St. John's University, offers tips such as Be Yourself and Ask Questions about such as the financial obligations of new members before joining a fraternal organization. How to be comfortable while wearing disposable underwear: It's really not that hard. When Teri and Ian first went on the race, they were rocking paper underwear which is not known for its comfort. While Depends may help you get back into life, it's also not the best underwear for the race. Today, thanks to the miracles of thin cotton, polypropylene, and low-cost Chinese manufacturing, there are several products such as Onederwear, El Boxer and Oops! Disposable panties, that provide the benefits of disposable underwear while also providing the user with a much more comfortable experience.
